Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water....

I'd really - REALLY - tried to put the whole paid links thing behind me and start '08 afresh but the points you make in your post are absolutely spot on. Big G have soooo muddied the water over this whole thing that I now have to seriously think about whether to include ANY links in anything I publish.

I know Matt reads Sphinn - c'mon, buddy, just have a think about what you guys are doing here.

Google does what Google must do to keep it's dominance of search . Can't blame them for the 'evil' that we all now know that they are indeed doing, I guess. Anyway let's stage a mini revolt and stop talking already. Check out my last post on my blog.

Amen ma brothas. I wonder if Google is noticing that even people who NEVER bought links are starting to have a bit of anti-google sentiment...

@Lodispoto: I like the idea(although spam will be aa HUGE issue), but is it not a bit odd to suggest that a new search engine that uses adsense is part of a mini-revolt against Google?
Their ads still get displayed, they still get paid. It's not so much of a revolt...It's kind of like if someone said they were "rebelling" against best buy and quitting their job, but in reality they just bought a whole bunch of shit from best buy and sold it on ebay.

....the actual concept for the search engine looks quite good though! Just not so much a revolt ;-)

Well contact me and see that the revolt part is true. The right side panel will be replaced in major keywords by entrepreneurs 'buying' the keyword ( at least pages 1,2,3,4 and 5 of it for various prices. )  I think you'll love the idea! Which is to get as many people as possible with a financial interest in the search engine owning whole pages that they can do with as they please ( as long as it is keyword relevant ) they can even link to their own sites or re-sell it!  Starting to see the bigger picture I hope! What till you see the ultra commission structure that entrepreneurs will see this weekend when mass e-mails go out.  Any money that my company makes we will plow back into infrastructure and servers and advertising and growth.

Make sure you take your blood pressure meds before reading this post if you get even remotely aggitated over big business bullying around little guys. The veins in my forehead are pulsating.

I left a comment at http://community.izea.com/blog/2007/12/an-invitation-t.html#comment-95265566 to talk a little bit about my memory of the conversation after I saw him and walked over to talk with Ted.

P.S. Lodispoto, congrats on starting your own search engine!

Quote from Matt Cutts' comment over there:

I mentioned that I fully expected people to try to use "recommended, but not required" links as a another way to try to buy PageRank-flowing links

So even he realizes that no matter what Google does to deter people, they will inevitably find a way around policing, restrictions and threats as long as they have an interest and they break no law.

Google's crusade against paid links can increasingly be characterized by two words: running amok.

Thanks Matt for the congrats.  I think letting people comment and vote on the results of your own SE Google, along with MSN and Yahoo can make for a very interesting community and search engine.  Throw in some Google adwords on the right and what could be better?
