So it’s 10am at work and I am trying to wade through my mountain of tasks in the few hours I’ve got before I need to pick up my son from daycare. The phone rings. The conversation goes like this:

She’s lucky she didn’t get the whistle. I keep a whistle next to the phone now, but I couldn’t find it when she called so she only got the Duran Duran punishment, LOL.

My favourite way of dealing with telemarketers is to turn it around and start asking them really personal questions... they always hang up!

Actually, there’s an easier way to deal with this without giving some poor schmuck a hard time.  When I get a call like that, I almost immediately interject with "I’m not interested, thank you, goodbye".  At that point I’ve said no politely and if they continue to talk, then I hang up.

The "poor schmuck" shouldn’t have called me back when I hung up on her. She wasted my time so I thought it was only fair I wasted hers.

OMG - whoever stumbled this, thank you. My server overloaded with the traffic, but still - thank you!

Gotta love the cross polination of SU from Sphinn! It’s a hard-ass job, in a high-pressure environment. I feel bad for the call-center ppl, but then again you need to understand when to fold...

That’s aweful Kalena. They actually had the nerve to call you back immediately after the frist hangup? Pathetic. At least you know how to make their calls worth their time, haha.

On Wall Street the newbies are assigned to cold calling, given scripts, and monitored for the way the handle all forms of rejection. The mentor coaches them on how to react, and sometimes it is very, very ugly. These cold callers get berated constantly, in a hazing fashion, all the while knowing their monthly pay check depends on both their success and how well they please their upline of mentors. If you ever want abuse, take that job. It’s a tough job, and one all brokers go thru. When I worked with Wall Street firms I heard so much of these Scipt Kiddies I learned their scripts and responses. When I started getting calls myself, I played them against their own scripts. Just ask them the things you know they aren’t prepared for, and help them along the process of humiliation. My wife was less forgiving... she had gone thru the process herself and actually held them to a higher standard. She’d query them but when they responded incorrectly, she’d let them know they screwed up, what they should have said, and sometimes even offer them a second chance. I guess that was worse... getting topped by a female you cold-called, getting shown how badly you had executed by none other than your mark, and then being reminded you had been screwed by the lead broker as well (the person who sold you a lead that was, in fact, another broker at home).I think it’s all fair game except the whistle... no need to actually hurt someone just because they are trying to do their job and support a family.
