The same point was brought up in one of those online seminars the people at ClickTracks do, and I had the same misgivings as the ones mentioned in the article, but it does make sense, especially for long tail searches, where the landing page is very clearly relevant to the query.

The crappy interface part reminds me of cycle jerk sites ... some surfers tried to get out for hours ... pretty successful before some killjoy invented the popup blocker ;)
