Nicely laid out and well-written article!

Agree with Mark, but disagree with avoiding controversy and no self-promotion because it speaks to mediocrity.  If done properly, people don’t care... they are hungry and have wants and as long as your information is good and you can defend your ideas and facts then controversy and self-promotion can work just fine.  Although I don’t agree with attacking people directly - one can be controversial simply by emphatically questioning or doubting an authoritarian’s suggestions.(go ahead, try it right now with what I just wrote!)

Why would I want to start controversy over a post like this?Would it be just to brand your name?

well, I keep forgetting that tech geeks have a different sense of humor than bodybuilders.  My name is already established.  It was just a playful invitation without expecting you to actually take advantage of it.  But, for what it’s worth, controversy doesn’t always start as a big smackdown - it can start as light disagreement and then build.

S’right - kill the self-promotion until you’ve reached a level of trust and authority on the forum.About the quickest way to get kicked out from a forum is to join and self-promote from the start. I still get emails from someone I banned long ago for aggressive spamming, who still tells me I’m a dick and the one losing out. As I run the largest forum of it’s type in the vertical, I somehow think that isn’t the case.

@aglobal - yes, really. ;-)@ibrian - can you tell us what you did so we can decide whether you are a dick or not?

Was I the only one that read the title and was kinda hoping for an article on the Ins and Outs of Marketing a Forum?Well the article had stylish looking headlines at least even if the information was ridiculously obvious imo.@Sam: He already said that he banned him for aggressively spamming (ie: non-stop self promotion)

SamFreedom, it was a new self-published writer - a nobody who should have known better. He’s been kicked out of pretty much every major forum in the vertical as well. It’s really annoying when big companies do it, though - just clueless staff and completely clueless PR agencies. I once created individual boards for a range of major publishers on a forum they wanted to connect with. The result? They spammed ads across multiple boards, and not even the ones I’d set up for them. I don’t care who they represent - forum admins protect the interests of their users, not least against spam.2c.

Always around, and just had a little time to relax over the holidays - but now it’s time to get back to work big time. :)

@gypsy - it’s nice to be understood. ;-)  I was just pullin’ his leg and, to his credit, he didn’t take it offensively.@gamermk - thanks, got it.  it was tongue-in-cheek humor.
