Hmmm, maybe that's why they've been causing commotion all over the internet, just to get rid of their boredom...
I think the commotion they're causing is another sign of Google the Corporation. It's Google consolidating its hold on a pretty substantial part of the web.
As corporate behavior gains the upperhand, doing new and exciting stuff *beyond* sitting on skippy balls is getting harder and harder.
Many who *do* get creative find themselves boxed in these days, stonewalled. The Platypus/GDrive project is a good example. Dodgeball another.
By itself it's not specificially good or bad -- it's just one of those things that is; young, fun, fast startup turns into nervous, scared, slow moving dino :)
Meh. Seriously, give me a 'lame' button.
Maybe 15,000 people need to each write a blog post announcing that they are not leaving Google. ;)

Ruud,
I liked the way you set that out by month. It was interesting data presented that way. Perhaps Google has acted as a bit of a greenhouse for all of these bright people, and now they need to take what they've learned and keep growing on their own. I'm still finding Google exciting, mostly because of the Local stuff, but also because of the change of atmosphere you noted in your post and the shift in the SEM industry from Google glorification to suspicion that is so evident everywhere now. It's always such a pleasure to read your writing, Ruud.

I'm with Brian here.
Seriously Brian ... it would be good to hear from the Google employee perspective too. I don't think Ruud's outta line here, just trying to make sense of everything going on. We're certainly not getting fed any information from the inside, so where information gaps exists, speculation will fill those gaps ... its a basic HR prinicple. You know everything Google does is under a microscope of the media ... and 'we (bloggers) are the media' these days.
What can you tell us to balance the perspective?
*zzzzz*
I never had this much thrill and saw this much innovation at my own startup :). Seriously. This company rocks, the people here rock.
Jeff, I point to John's comment as he's joined more recently than me :)
