While I practice the latter methodology personally, I don't have any scientific evidence that comes anywhere close to proving that one approach works better than the other.
The only thing I can say is that using spaces is arguably a good idea from a usability perspective.
SEO-wise, I've not found it to make a difference.
I'm a fan of adding a space between the "/". The only instance in which I won't add it is if it prevents me from fitting everything within the first 70 characters.
I like simple titles.
