well the 404 header is not smart to send the adwords bot and can get a domain nuked. I have experienced this before and when inquiring with the adwords rep it was because of the 404 header being sent to the adwords quality bot.A smarter way is to just use a re-write rule to catchall *.html and send a 200 response.
I agree that the 404 needs to be done carefully -as it can cause other issues as well, if it doesnt return a true 404 header. However, the re-write rule does overcome that limitation.As far as the Google Checkout, thats a great observation. Having something colorful on the listings definitely stands out. Until I got to the 404 redirect, my thougths were that these were not unfair advantages, but rather how to take FULL advantage. Thanks
A 404 is not a redirect. It is an error code to say "nothing here".Breaking web standards will eventually lead to trouble.
