So I guess thats why you hired me right? lol!
Heh. If only bosses knew and could afford not to fear that. But companies leave that to HR.
Agreed completely Jill! Guess its not so much about being better than you, but being than you in certain areas to compensate for our weaknesses. It is scary initially ... but once theyve earned your trust ... Wow! I kick myself for not doing it sooner.
Jeff,I didnt have time to read your post (yea I know), but anyways the only time you should hire people that are better then you is when you cant cover all areas of your company / business for example you have people wanting large database driven website with high quality flash designs, but then say they need online marketing done at the same time. You will need people thats more experienced in different areas such as flash, programming, and online marketing specially when your taking on larger projects, but techniqually you would never want to hire any one that is better then you at what you do...@Jill,And Jill actually I just edited this comment because I just got done reading your comment. Thats pretty what Im saying to I would have to specially agree with you on the part you can learn more from hiring other people because I have learned so much since our company has been growing I have a programmer that just graduated from Harvard and the guy is brillant hes from pakistan, but when it comes to programming he knows what hes talking about which granted I am a great programmer by all means and famaliar with numer languages, but I dont have time to even touch it any more because Im dealing with clients so much and trying to keep other things moving and growing with our company.
People better than you are not people that know an area you dont know but people who know what you know best, only much better. How to run the business included.
I dont think it is good to hire someone in your business for every all the aspects of your business. Maintaining a structure to a business is a very important step in making sure your business will succeed. If you are the owner of your business and you know every little bit about your business keep it that way. You can hire 2 or 3 people (not just one) that are experts in certain areas of your business.True it will cost you a bit more, but you can rest assured that all areas of your business is getting the attention it deserves. And additionally, only you have all the full information about your business.
I think the point is; you cant know everything, so dont be afraid to hire people that are exceptional. These hires should compensate for your weaknesses.Leads to the question; would you hire someone that is likely better than you, at what you consider to be your own strengths? I would suggest ... YES!
"A" people hire "A" people; "B" people hire "C" people.I think it was Steve Jobs who said that.
