Stoney describes almost exactly what happened in my small business. When I started my site in the 90s I studied the actions and activities of sites like eBay and Amazon. 10 years later weve built a solid foothold in a space that big yellow page companies and others are eager to be involved in.
Thats how I approached my site design. Looked at the big kids in the playground and studied their tactics to copy what I liked best.
My niche is small businesses and I find that a lot of small businesses look at their competitors sites (big and small) and see what they like and what they think works and (more importantly) what doesnt work. I seldom have to advise someone to do the same thing.Judging also from my experience when small businesses do expand, then the attitude is "Act like a big guy, pay like a little guy".Nice article BTW.
Congratulations, Stoney, on an excellent article. The title brought to mind a counter-thought on why small businesses should not act like some big companies. Some big companies are so customer-insensitive that its mind-boggling. At least with a small company you can always be close to your customers and thats really powerful.
Terrific article for anyone who sells online marketing solutions to SMEs to share with their prospects or clients
If you think small you will be small...great post. Its a good thing for every business to keep in mind.
