Thats a great title!
Im glad someone is writing about this because it needs to be said. Mixx = Poor ROI. Period. Its not worth the effort for marketers and Ive mentioned that before on some of the exuberant, pro-Mixx stories on Sphinn for the past few months.
agreed. i tried it for a while but was not encouraged enough to continue. i stopped visiting, will try it out again down the road im sure.
I like mixx. The UI is outstanding and intuitive, and the community is, for the most part, smart and friendly. Obviously, it needs time to mature as a general-use tool and build up a bigger community before it can have much heft in terms of traffic generation, but then again, Im not convinced that raw bulk traffic is that valuable an ROI, either. In other words, I like it as a social media consumer; and I think its too early to tell what the marketing value, if any, will be. I could forsee that if it takes off in popularity, the groups and topics might be more valuable, targeted channels than hitting the "popular" page. But no, its not there yet.
I should say before it gets thrown around too much.. Traffic is not the desired result from social media. Links are what we all want. But if you dont have traffic then no one will see your content and thus no one will link to you. Traffic in this case was just the easiest way to provide a metric that can be measured.
Good work Brent! One could argue that traffic is traffic no matter how minimal, but hand submissions and promotions make the effort ridiculous over the long haul.
@Brent: That last sentence of yours taps a vein thats been throbbing in my head for the last six months. Figuring out relevant metrics for Social Media. Okay. Its probably more accurate to say "Figuring out a less time-consuming, simpler way to track the relevant metrics for SM." Either way, headaches and spreadsheets galore.
Im glad someone wrote about this! I thought I was the only one that thought this way!
@katfrench.. I will look at maybe trying to put together a post with some other peoples thoughts with my own on how to track ROI and value from social media. It is something we all get but there is no guide or explanation that helps other people understand. I will write it on my list down here.. done.
Its really depressing that in the 2nd test case that the submission received more votes than the actual site got unique visitors. That really speaks volumes to the lack of value Mixx offers.
I dont really care too much about the traffic, 100 or so visitors is fine, I submit my clients articles to Mixx to get do follow links and to chop up their link profiles, I have had trackbacks on my clients sites from people who have found them via Mixx and the Mixx links themselves really count.
Im using mixx on a personal level, so although I have respect for you brent...your title doesnt make sense. Thats like saying all 83 niche social sites that Brendan Picha recently posted are for kids, just because they dont bring much traffic...
@ Viper.. No worries man. It is not meant to come off as it is for kids but if you were older you would remember the Trix commercials. The Rabbit always trying to get the Trix and each time the kids grab it and say "Silly Rabbit... Trix are for Kids"So it is just a play on rhyme.. Cheers
OK, now I feel like an idiot ;)
my kids identified the rabbit as the trix yogurt guy. great headline :)
how old are your kids?
@viper 5 and 8
I didnt know that this post was getting so much attention and I only knew to look because Google alerts notified me when Glen wrote my name above. Does anyone else have a Google alert for their name or am I the only assh*le? :) This was the only story that caught my attention today when I was looking through my feed reader. Brent doesnt post all that often but when he does its always a good read. Mixx has potential but I feel that its downfall is the user interface. Its not as simple or as informative as Diggs. If this could be improved I think they would have a winning formula. For now, Mixx reminds me of Facebooks early ad program...looks and sounds great but has a butt conversion rate. If they can improve this, then theyll really have our attention and the average end users will follow.
