After all the discussions of cloaking, approved cloaking, and Google finally deciding to label pages that require a login, it looks like the NYT -- who were accused of getting away with approved cloaking -- will be dropping their practice of charging for access to some content.

I wonder if this will help their rankings, since this is good for their users. If it does then it gives more credence to the google guidelines.

Not really. It gives credence to creating and sharing value. Few companies will be the record keepers of history. Being stuck behind a closed wall makes it hard to keep enough authority to keep that market position and market influence.
