Tim argues that SMO is by now not SEO anymore. While most people out there do not know the term SMO and only a minority is familiar with the concept of SEO or what the difference between the two is, do you really want to use a new term to confuse people Tim?

:) nice summary of the post. If you think its a good idea to call a Lion, Elephant 2.0 then I guess that won't confuse people at all.
By merging and interchanging the terms or creating yet more terms you are just confusing people by actually seperating the jobs you can then build understanding of each indvidual job and the important role they play.

Of course what you really are saying is you built up a brand and you don't want to change it which I can totally understand.

Tad - even SMO isn't really SMO; it's probably SMM.

Sorry!

They are all parts of marketing.   SEO is the more "technical" stuff.   SMM is the more "social" and  "branding" stuff.

Ask somebody on the street what SMM is. In Germany people know SM, sado masochism ;-)
