I agree with the theme of this article. The only really successful SEO is based on a long-term committment of resources.
There is short term value, yes, and it's a case by case issue especially in regards to a campaign's life span. But the wham-bam-thank-you-ma'am SEO tactics are really ruining the industry by generating mindsets that can only see the results negatively.
To spin it, SEO is a serious of short-term events that happen over a long period of time. Tweaking, wait, tweaking, wait, etc... until the website spark ignites in the SERPS. But then you have to keep building afterwards and that is what a lot of people fail to remember until there SERPS start to lag.
I suspect my definition of SEO has expanded beyond the proper definition of optimizing pages and getting links. To me, SEO means the relentless promotion of a site using tactics that are direct SEO as well as those that can serve as traffic channels on their own, yet with SEO benefits.
Agreed, however, not all websites allow for constant marketing and link-laden article flooding.
You're absolutely right. Another point clients miss is that SEO has the best ROI long term than other internet marketing strategies.
The article makes some very good points. I believe many companies are beginning to realize the need for long term SEO efforts. Unfortunately there are still far too many that think you can make a few changes and let it go. You start seeing them in forums after a while asking why they are losing their rankings saying they have not made any SEO changes in months. It's hard to convince them that the reason is directly related to the fact that they don't have an ongoing SEO process.
MattC, I tend to think everyone can benefit from ongoing marketing and there are many ways to do it for any type of site. Many industries focus too much on what their competition is doing and believe that they don't have the type of site that can be marketed consistently instead of working on ways to make themselves stand out. Standing still is not good for any business and sites that decide to focus time and energy to SEO can set themselves apart from their competitors and take a leadership role.
MattC, "articles"? I don't think so. At least not the "article directory" sort. I'm talking about social media, viral marketing, email, advertising and public relations.
