Worth reading, even for non-smut-peddlars. The ignorance of the crowd applies to other industries too.
great article.. good writing, good insight.
I think you missed the most important reason that it's hard ... that you have to stop looking at the porn long enough to get the work done! ;)
Where is the insight?
Since when does a blog post bemoaning how hard it is to do something, without presenting solutions on how to overcome them, qualify as insightful?
I encourage whoever wrote that blog post to open their mind, stop doing things the way other people do it. Read this to get an idea of how to build links to a porn site: http://www.martinibuster.net/2008/01/how-to-build-links-to-crappy-websites.html then go to Church and give me twenty Hail Marys and a dozen Our Fathers. LOL
Seriously, here is a great example of NOT thinking things through to their natural solution. The blogger says this: "There's nothing to write about. Porn is about pics and video - not text. It's like optimizing for flash"
That is a great example of thinking like everyone else does and leaving opportunities on the table. The blogger is looking at an opportunity and CAN'T see it through the forest of his preconceptions. You can have an ALL TEXT porn page with a banner and a couple links to a sign up page. Who says you can't? Good grief, it's SEO 101. Approach it the same way you would approach a site about travel, education, or telescopes. Same rules.
"You can have an ALL TEXT porn page with a banner and a couple links to a sign up page."
and a 99% bounce rate
The bounce rate is going to be high regardless, but not that high. Drop your preconceptions of what a porn site, or travel site, or any other site for that matter can be, and you'll open your eyes to new opportunities. ;)
Here's a paragraph that approaches the solution:
"There are thousands of long tails you can optimize for. Model names, celebrity names, paysite names, niches, superniches, DVD titles - an endless stream of keywords you can monetize, some with little to no competition."
Nice post! I knew it had to be hard, just didnt know how hard. Thanks for the insight!
Martinibuster,
The "insight" is a through look at some of the challenges of porn site SEO. It's interesting for people who have never worked on an adult site or studied how they get their links and rankings.
I've seen (comparatively) far less "insightful" articles on the front page Sphinn recntly ;)
Lol, martinibuster, give me a break. I wrote that post in under 5 minutes (it felt like 5 minutes, anyway), just so I can give Sebastian a link.
"You can have an ALL TEXT porn page with a banner and a couple links to a sign up page."
Porn reviews, which are nearly 100% text, converts like mad. Most paysites will tell you that review traffic has the best conversion ratio compared to LL/TGP/free site traffic. No, you don't need pictures or videos to sell.
I know that. But I intentionally framed the article using all-or-nothing generalizations with words like "never" and "always" to amplify the message.
The fact is that most adult webmasters know nothing but reciprocal links. I'm not saying there's no solution to that. There are. I'm just painting an accurate picture of where the adult industry is at SEO-wise.
I've run AdWords campaigns for both adult and real estate; with real estate, you create a campaign and it goes live 2 minutes later. An adult campaign can take 4-7 days, you can have 5 different reviewers approving and disapproving the same affiliate link - which some other affiliate is already running, and have Google threaten you with account deletion.

Heh. Ok, ok. I blame Incredibill, lol. I guess I take it for granted that most people already understand some of this stuff, but apparently not. That's a good insight about the reviews. Good stuff.
Blame me? I didn't tell you to spout off...
I think with the recent success of websites like youporn and other adult blogs I think SEO still can be done effectively.
