Snip- Quite frankly, I don't know what to think. I like the idea of burying posts that are not on topic and leaving a comment that applies to why they did not like it. Evidently, users have been using the spam button if they don't like a story and that is not the way to use this platform either. Just because someone doesn't agree with a story does not make the story spam. So, in a way they probably have been in need of this feature for a while and some are just nervous that it could be abused.

Just another indication of the difficulty of the formula as proposed. I believe a simple arithmetical difference of the Sphinners and the DeSphinners gives a very poor indication of what is happening. I think it should be as easy to DeSphinn (Ho-Hum) as it is to Sphinn. Then the total counts of both Sphinners and Desphinners should be shown. This is simple and avoids all the controversy that seems to be developing around the concept as proposed.
The closer 'desphinn' implementation gets, the more I think it will cause all kinds of problems here - just one more thing for everyone to disagree on and be a point of contention. That said, I have faith that the Sphinn team will get it right in the end.
Although the planned "Desphinn" feature is the most controversial addition for Sphinn so far, I think that we just need to have more faith about the morals and principles within our community.
This is not Digg, and I feel that the way our community will use the tool will be a lot different to other social platforms. I'd also like to stress that we're not compiling Sphinn from Basic here, if a feature doesn't work as well as we'd like it to, adapting or removing it is quite a simple task.
Lastly, the great thing about having a niche community such as this one, is that it's a lot easier to find people behaving badly and even easier to stop them.
I'm sure that in general it will be sensibly used. I just see the possibility of resentment over desphinns and 'tit for tat' desphinning when one party decides they're being picked on.
It will be an interesting social experiment :)
Eh I hate when there are "experiments" on MY favorite traffic source haha.
"Eh I hate when there are "experiments" on MY favorite traffic source haha."
That is true. Time to get some more traffic sources then!
I don't really know what to say on desphinns other than we have to try it. For one thing, people have asked for it. Secondly, as I keep saying, without it, people are hitting the spam button. Yep, it's an experiment. And we'll know in short order if it's a problem or not. If it is -- if it's clearly harmful to the community here, we're obviously going to get rid of it or fix it in some way.
On my part Danny, there's no need for any further reponses. I'm just being argumentative at this point. In reality, it may work out completely fine. We'll see how it goes!
