Wrote this in the comment section of this post so thought I'll post it here too:

The title of this post is misleading and inaccurate. I always respond to multiple comments in a single comment, although I haven’t been doing that for the last few posts.. been busy.

Its a huge jump to assume that the blogger in question doesnt read all the comments or isnt influenced by the comments left by the readers. Or that they think the readers suck.

In fact, I do a fair bit of comment responding via email. Again something that is not visible to any observer and another factor that isn’t calculated in your analysis, which is a generalization at best.

People love to attack the 'big time bloggers' for not living up to their expectations. The truth is that we have different realities. How do you respond to 70+ comments on a blog post? Especially when you are a successful web entrepreneur? Snarky posts with ill reasoning irritate me.

Not everything needs to be responded via the comment box, especially if the post is old.

I thought this was an interesting post, though written in a needlessly accusatory manner.

It seems to me that there are 4 kinds of blogs, in terms of how comments are handled.

1) Where the author publishes an article and people clamor to comment, directing their comments to him/her, but the author rarely bothers to respond to what his audience is saying to him or asking him. Without pointing fingers, I can think of a number of blogs that run like this.

2) Where the author publishes an article and has an audience that has become so interactive that the article starts a conversation amongst the readers whether the author bothers to participate or not after hitting publish. SEOmoz is a great example of this, eh?

3) Where the author publishes his post and then responds to almost every comment, even if there are a ton of them. The popular blogger I'm thinking of who does an amazing and caring job of this is Bill Slawski. Literaly, his comments section is like a classroom where he takes the time to further teach and discuss. Love the atmosphere of that!

4) Where the author publishes a post and receives only a few comments and eagerly responds to each because they are highly valued as a rarer commodity than what the highly visible blogs enjoy. My own blog falls into this category.

Do others see this as a correct breakdown of how comments appear to be handled on the various industry blogs?

Miriam yes that is a very good breakdown, but also as Maki points out commenting styles play a huge roll in statistics gathering.
Some statistic gathering of blogs are based upon the number of comments each blog receives, thus replying to comments in a bunch of replies by the author can have a reduced impact on comment numbers. This might be a good thing if people are using subscribe to comments, and the replies are inconsequential - I would hate to send out an email from my server with just an "I agree"
I am a fan of threaded commenting, but at the same time I am aware that it can lead to better or poorer quality comments

Thank, Miriam.

I don't always get a chance to respond to comments immediately, but I do try to reply to the ones that I do get.

I really appreciate that people leave comments, and are interested in the topics that I write about, whether they have questions, or different perspectives, or agree or  disagree with something that I've written.

The web provides us with an opportunity to learn together, to share ideas, to discuss common interests. I'm really happy that I've had the chance to meet a number of people who have left comments on my blog, or talk to them on the phone, or exchange emails with them, or have discussions with them on forums, or comment on their blogs.  I don't always get the opportunity to write comments on others' blogs when I want to, but I'll try when I can.

And there are a few blogs I read where the authors don't have comments enabled, and I wish that they did - so that I can ask questions, or raise a different point of view, or show my agreement and appreciation.
