A good designer could've incorporated the same content in a way that wouldn't look so "unnatural" while still being below the fold. This isn't the first time I've seen this sort of thing from an otherwise legitimate brand.

Thats ain't gray hat, but they could have integrate it in the design in a way that look natural for the end users.

They've had this going for ages, but I'll agree w/ most commenters here that 1) it's 'ok' and 2) it definitely could have been integrated better.  Also notice it provides a gateway to their geographic/race/religion/etc SEO pages (which is pretty much standard for online dating sites).
