Debra Mastaler’s conundrum in the current link building environment: "link far out and stick it to the man," or something a bit more pragmatic.

Thoughtful post Debra, and thanks for continuing to post. What to discuss is an important issue, and some have responded by not saying anything at all, either literally or in essence. But it doesn’t have to be that way because one can still discuss the issues while side-stepping specifics. >>>How much is too much information? Anything that goes beyond teaching a person how to fish. One needn’t divulge where the best fishing holes are at- you’ll only get the droolers spoiling it for everyone else. The person I’m interested in addressing is the one who can figure things out for themself. >>>Do you discuss principles and leave out the specifics? In my Conference Presentations I stick to principles, but give lots of examples while generally not naming specific websites and niches. I rarely put my specifics or examples on a PowerPoint, either. I want people who attend to hear it and put that in their notebook- That way I avoid having the meat of the discussion posted on session recaps all over the net. :)About the Wired blowupI never read the initial Wired post because the title resembled just another link bait title, and I figured it was either a bait and switch or they really were giving away links, at which point the links would soon be worthless so why bother? What would have made a better article is a discussion of those kinds of sites and how they’re open for obtaining links, and a discussion of why those links may or may not help in the long run, etc.

Hey Roger - happy new year!  You wrote:"What would have made a better article is a discussion of those kinds of sites and how they’re open for obtaining links, and a discussion of why those links may or may not help in the long run, etc."Well, I disagree with you on that point. The post was about how people are being slapped for divulging those very types of things so I wasn’t about to run out additional sites and techniques.  Because if I had, then they’d be just like what you said here: "worthless so why bother?"
