Every day we get businesses coming to us looking to improve their search engine rankings. They want to talk about an SEO campaign but one quick look at their site and we see that SEO may not be the right approach for them. Usually in these cases the site needs a complete usability makeover.

Excellent point! I see the same problem (maybe even more of a problem) with those looking to do PPC. Companies want to advertise via Adwords but have a site that clearly will not work in paid search. Web sites owners should concentrate on designing a site with focused landing pages, a proper conversion path and good site usability, first and foremost. Then think about paid campaigns.
