To Barrys dismay, no blood or tears from either side.
Interesting discussion. Although Danny pretty much dominated the conversation - not much of a debate but a good listen nonetheless.
Were back to the circle jerk again. Why anyone would waste time listening to someone (yes, even Danny Sullivan whos well worth listening closely too) talking on the subject of how great we all are on Shoemoneys last gasp radio show is beyond me. Youre great. No no, YOURE great. No, no I insist...YOURE great. Everyone pat each other on the back. Can we replace this with something worth reading instead of an SEO sewing bee?P.S. SEO Circle Jerk stories are to be known going forward as Sphinn post type #2 (Type #1 is a boring list of something). So in the future I can just post the message "TYPE 2" as the reason for the desphinn. Actually, if we could get a special red desphin button marked "#2" thatd be great.
@wheel LMAO type #1 and type #2 posts !
Sphunn for wheels type I, type II comment, someone (wheel) need to develop this list further.
I wrote a post about how crap this show was, and how I wish Danny Sullivan has really opened up a can of WhoppAss on Shoemoney. Available here. Its a bit of a giggle.Cheers.Allan
Well, Wheel -- it wasnt no youre great, no youre great. If you listened to it and got that impression, I dont know what to say.Me, I came away with the impression that Shoemoney had a very narrow view of what SEO is, not realizing there are a range of companies that need SEOs of different skills. We also talked about the great difficulty in how someone sets themselves apart from the many people who will call themselves SEOs without any ability to perform. We went back over ideas like a search engine whitelist for companies that might want to avoid hiring a firm that might get them banned, though I also pointed out to Shoemoney theres a big issue in assuming the search engines somehow can declare who is a good SEO and not.We also revisted the idea of SEMPO or someone allowing a self-reporting systems where firms could voluntarily let those with complaints lodge them, with a guaranteed response. The idea here is that good firms can say they participate and know that they should have a good rep backed up by lack of complaints.Thats not perfect either. I dont know what the perfect solution is or if theres one at all. I do know a lot of SEOs are new to the space and have no idea of the past struggles SEO has already taken on in terms of reputation. A lot has been forgotten or isnt even known. Shoemoney was an example of this, declaring that SEOs could never unite -- and Im like dude, thats exactly what SEMPO was, SEOs saying we need to get together for a common good.Frankly, Id love to see someone actually go through and pull out some of the many decent points and issues that were raised rather than the complaint that there should have been more whoop-ass. Maybe Ill do a post eventually myself, though Im kind of tired of having done those posts already. But it was a surprise to see someone like Shoemoney, who if hes not in the SEO industry is very close to many in it, saying what he said. I thought it useful to talk to him. He said he learned something, and thats fine with me.
"Frankly, Id love to see someone actually go through and pull out some of the many decent points and issues that were raised " -- hmmmm..... interesting. I might.Other than that, this issue is perfectly fine by me and is no different in many other industries. I have been in business for 20 years now and other industries I have been in all have their share of providers that are either unethical or simply unqualified that can make some of the legitimate folks upset at such generalizations. I used to do a lot of consulting in the construction world and there was no lack of people that would talk about rip off contractors or make jokes about contractors that never show up and so forth.I could detail the same in more than a few industries….. my point is that it is normal. This is not a web marketing centric issue and IMO it will NEVER go away. All you can do is work towards making the industry better as a whole with your actions. We may be best served by taking comments such as Jeremy ( a-la Calcainis begets Pasternack) with a grain of salt, making our respectful pleasantries and moving on. I often wonder if we’re just being sheep once more for the likes of the folks listed and they are the ones truly benefiting. I am going to though, start a Soap Opera with Danny as a central character :0) …. There was the Wired thing and then this…. I wonder what is on tap for next week? … (waiting with baited breath :0)
Hang on...- Superman style logo- many pictures of girls in tight t-shirts- cheesy American sports presenter style intro for an otheriwse geeky chat- some name dropping - repeated references to knowing no decent SEOs in the local area...could Jeremy be over compensating a little? ;) We get it - yer the big man on campus! :PId be a little worried about seeing Jeremy speak at a conference for fear he might try to mark his territory on the front row! :)
Ok Danny..... I have taken you challange monsiuer... engarde!http://www.huomah.com/news/latest/does-seo-have-an-image-problem.html
Really important point from Danny: SEO people *must* know the particular industry of the particular client theyre working for.What works for a retail operation doesnt necessarily work for a news site, for example.One-size-fits-all SEO doesnt work.
I for one and glad to see balance "back in the SEO force" when confronted with isseues of public smear tactic such as this. Obviously Shoe pulled the chain of the wrong EXPERT on this one.Danny for all that you have done already and are continuing to do behind the scenes like create a wonderful virtual environment like Sphinn, hats off, take a bow, your the man (although you are too modest to do this) your contributions are appreciated.Education has always been the key, and as a gentleman, you provided that...
@theGypsy, thanks -- sphunn :)
@ Danny - quite welcome. I agree there has been a little too much drama in the community lately. Likely a symptom of growing pains from Social 1.0 (forums) to our current state. In many ways Jeremy is only echoing what my of us hear down in the trenches all the time. This is not about name calling.... in many ways we should thank Jeremy for dropping a little vinager on the wound. This is an issue we in the SEO community should address seriously, not with contempt.( hmmm... Down in the Trenches; that has a nice ring to it... a new feature post? One thing keeps leading into another... :0)
