This is big news for SEO, especially on regional searches. We all lamented the reduction of organic positions on page 1 from 10 to 7 (or fewer) brought on by Universal Results. If this change stays, there’s lots more elbow room.

Note that I still see the old format for local search as of today, but the screen shot shows a clear condensing of results.

I’m seeing it for Portland, Seattle, Miam, Boston, LA, etc. - but occasionally NO local results too, and I’ve not see the old format at all. I REALLY think this is a vast improvement from a user standpoint, and I hope it sticks around for a lot of reasons. I’m also noticing that "reviews" either the numbner or the source do not seem to be affecting ranking placement any more, but that’s fine. With all 10 on the map, simply being there is good enough, assuming users look at the map.I like it!

Changes in LA, Chicago, Phoenix, and San Deigo. No longer pulling reviews from CitySearch and others. More granular serches (smaller than metro areas) beginning to show new map results (at least in Los Angeles). Linking the shakeup although my business is no longer listed #1 in major metro.
