Ross Dunn does not equal SitePro News
Referencing http://learningseobasics.com/archives/142

Some of you have seen this comment from Ross on the Sphinn post http://sphinn.com/story/24701:

"The full article that I originally wrote can be found here: http://news.stepforth.com/blog/2008/01/how-to-troubleshoot-dropped-search.php

Unfortunately I am not credited for the article that Kimberly Brock summarized on her website."

I received this comment from Ross Dunn of Stepforth yesterday as well:

Kimberly, I assume you posted this article. Please properly credit “Ross Dunn” with writing this article and provide a link back to my website at http://news.stepforth.com/blog/2008/01/how-to-troubleshoot-dropped-search.php

Thank you.

So, in order to clarify, rectify and sanctify my newbie name and to give kudos where kudos belong, (since most of you have already been to the site and will not see the interaction in full outside of the water cooler, here's what it be lookin' like:

Ross: (I moderated Jims comment before yours not realizing my replies to each comment would be out of order..)

As SitePro News had sent this post in my email yesterday morning, I thought it to be informative and something that would be of interest given the nature of my site’s target audience.

I had assumed, inappropriately, that the writers of SitePro worked as a unit, not in singular form. I was unfamiliar with their system.
I apologize for not giving initial kudos where kudos belong..

Your post will help alot of people who otherwise may not know where to turn if they find they are experiencing sudden search engine death..

I have made the revisions and I thank you for your insight.

The act of blogging creates opportunities for people to go from observer to publisher, to editor, to perhaps instigator or educator or influencer.

Some of the challenges that are presented to people who blog can expand beyond deciding upon topics, coming up with approaches used to present them, determining posting frequencies, deciding how to link to others.

People who are new to blogging, and even those who aren't so new, have a number of other issues to contend with, from learning about how to attribute ideas to others (and where, when they publish in multiple places), how much use is fair use, how to respond to comments, and how to engage an audience in a compelling manner, amongst many others.

I think the topic that Kim raises here is one that we can use to discuss our experiences, good and bad, and struggles with blogging, and self publishing.

The first blog I wrote at, I set up for a friend and our first post was on September 10th, 2001.  It was a legal blog, and we had some topics in mind, but after the events of September 11th, we just froze up - we wanted to write about much smaller legal issues, and were surrounded by news and blog posts on topics that were far beyond the scope of what we wanted to discuss.

We kickstarted the blog a couple of months later, but that initial beginning didn't go too smoothly.  We started posting some of the smaller topics that we originally wanted to discuss, and found that there was an audience for those, too.  But, as a self publisher, you wonder in those early days.

What kinds of struggles and challenges did you face when you first started blogging?

@Bill: Thanks Bill. I think you just about covered what I was hoping to accomplish here with one swoop. giggle.

Yes I was hoping others may step in and say.."Oh we've all done it when we first started" or something that could get a conversation going on how to handle these issues or other insight to the 'beginnings of blogger's quests'...

Ce lavie on getting a coversation from this..at least this clarifies that there was no intention to give SitePro credit for something that Ross was due.

@SpostareDuro - I think it shows commendable honesty and goodwill to actually post about this here on Sphinn. Anybody starting out in blogging is liable to make the odd mistake, whether it be with their content, a misjudged post (which I've certainly done) or as in this case a misplaced credit. The fact that you've brought this to light in such a way can only be of benefit to the rest of us (myself included) still new to this and finding our niche. Well done Kim!

Nick: I was actually scared to submit this but I feel I made the right decision.

I am more scared of becoming a fake, a manipulator, or exchanging honesty for a future dollar that I cannot be buried with anyway.

Your comment was more fuel to maintain that desire for me.

I almost want to hear something negative like, "Shame on you for.." lol..

Now THERE's a discussion! lol

Thanks for taking time to comment. Always love seeing your bright yellow flavor..(smile)

I hope Sphinn never reaches the point where people are scared of it.  It's not bloody Google.

Jeeb90: Seeing as you chose not to Sphinn this, yet felt it worthy of a comment, I am not sure how to approach you. You have only been a Sphinnmember since the 21st of this month, so maybe you lack an understanding of the processes here..

As I am still learning here as well, I can assure you that I am less fearful of Google than I am of my reputation being spoiled inside my online communities..There is much to be gained and/or lost as a result of what you establish as your personality, work ethics, and overall strategies here and the other social networking/media environments.

Maybe I have chosen a word that somehow intimidates people "fear"..But I view fear in a compltely different light than what some may..

Mark Twain coined a quote that I use as my signature in some settings "Courage is resistence to fear; mastery of fear - not absense of fear"

I am not trying to incur that I am some courageous chick..I am trying to say that I have a 'healthy fear' for anything that may/may not be a source of discomfort or harm in any fashion..

Truly you either do not understand how influencial an environment like this can be or you maybe you are here also to begin setting the stage for who you are and what you are about which means you may just be attempting to be heard..

Which is still ok..But maybe you have some insight as to how you would have dealt with the topic at hand? Or some other sort of comment in the direction of what you have also learned by making newbie mistakes? I'd love to hear that too...

Welcome to Sphinn. I hope you get your needs met here. (smile)

Kim,
Everyone should be considerate of each other and approach them with respect, but don't expect that everything that is done is perfect.

Like Bill said,
The act of blogging creates opportunities for people to go from observer to publisher, to editor, to perhaps instigator or educator or influencer.

This also gives us the opportunity to post before we get it all straight. We all make mistakes, we don't know everything... but if we don't keep our humility in check then we will get better!

Live, Learn and move on!

Pittfall: "Kim,

I hope I didn't sound haughty..That was not my intention at all (eeeek)

I was more or less just trying to understand where Jeeb90 was coming from..not trying to intimidate or sound like i am better than anyone for sure!

But, If you are simply making the statement for GP, to show that mistakes are made (regarding the Ross topic) then I am glad you feel that way..I don't quite want to be labled as a content thief round these parts..(smile)

Kim,
I would not call you a content thief and I really wasn't referring to the Ross issue in particular, more the idea in general.

We have to be considerate of each other, mistakes and all! Those that are unwilling to admit mistakes and those that are above others making mistakes need to exit stage left.

Like Jeeb said, we shouldn't ever get to the point that we make others anxious or fearful of posting, commenting or asking questions in this environment. We should welcome the novice, intermediate and advanced users!

@SpostareDuro: Haha, you've put a lot more deep thought into my two sentence comment than I have. I thought it was fairly innocous.

The reason I didn't Sphinn this was because I have no opinion about it.

SpostareDuro, it is very honorable of you to write this post. It shows a lot of courage and character that will get you a long way in this industry.

Thank you for your consideration, I am sorry if I seemed to come down hard on you but I found that article in a few other places in the same hour and was feeling a might bit protective :-)

Anyway, at the very least I am very happy this sparked some conversation on the proper way to source content because I think there are still many out there that need a refresher.

Cheers Kimberly!

PS.
I wish I saw this post earlier to comment but I took a day off and stayed firmly away from my computer... of course that is when my name ends up getting some use ;-)
