Matt Cutts blogged about this back in Aug 2006 where he said that Google doesnt treat different TLDs (or specific sites) any differently - its all down to the PR (and presumably other non site specific factors):- http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/another-two-videos/- (where he discusses it - near the end of the video) http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-1756437348670651505Off topic, but is the SEO Roundtable page really Sphinn worthy? Its two lines of text and a link to the Google Groups thread which itself only has two posts... (http://groups.google.com/group/Google_Webmaster_Help-Indexing/browse_thread/thread/8356d3581ce67211/).
Thanks for the links and feedback MarketingGuy.In regards to your comments about the article being Sphinn worthy or not... I tend to submit things that:1. I find interesting2. I think others will find interesting3. that will start a good discussion on the topicIf you dont think the article is worth a Sphinn, then dont Sphinn it... thats your right as a contributing member of Sphinn. It honest doesnt bother me - there are plenty of other articles that dont make the grade and Sphinn is a better place because of it.
Im not saying it wasnt interesting - clearly if people dont know about this then its worthy of being here. All Im saying is that perhaps linking to one short article (in this case) holds no value as the source of the story is the Google Groups thread. I should probably have started a new discussion on the topic so apologies for hijacking this one. :)
Thats a fair point MarketingGuy (an no probs about the hijack either) :)
Sphunn because I got a really good chuckle when JohnMu busted the guy for ripping off a post from blueseo.
Id hate to sound cynical, but the issue of .edu value comes not from what is being said, but what is not being said.Because issues such as trust and authority are such conerns in SEO for Google these days, few .edu domains could be considered as having poor scores in either area. Also, note how Google has previously and repeatedly mentioned in patents such as LocalRank and Hilltop about identifying authorities. .edu would be a simple way of identifying such authorities. If all Google are saying is that .edu domains are not specifically selected for a ranking boost compared to other TLDs, this does not diminish how .edu links are going to be regarded.Of course, that doesnt mean to say that pushing spam onto university sites should be condoned - personally I think its pretty sh!tty and soulless, and right up there with selling you granny - but if you have an opportunity to collaborate with good content on a university site, Id class that under "golden opportunity".2c.
