Silicon Alley Insider reports Google is trying out barcodes in newspaper ads. This reminds one of a terrible idea that was behind one of the biggest dot-bombs ever: CueCats. Deja vu! Do CueCats have 9 lives?

Sphunn for nostalgia and accuracy :)

Those CueCats still pop up on eBay.

A good way to explain someone what's off in this process is to use a telephone number as an example. There's generally nothing wrong with an ad with a telephone number. No-one, at least no-one in his right mind, would say; "we need to fix this -- let's put the number in barcode, have people snap a photo from it and *that* will magically connect them"

Same holds true for adding a URL to an ad.
