Interesting look with this key quote: "We looked at all the past recessions from 1950 on and we found that direct mail -- Google's most direct predecessor -- actually grew during six recessions," Cowen and Company's Friedland says. "Given the current environment, there's no reason to think Google will outperform. But there's no reason to think it will underperform."

And their stock dropped from 747 (literally) to 530-something why then?

Gab, you assume the stock price is based on people making rational decisions. Some investors have no idea what Google does -- just it's big, growing, so buy buy buy! $747 might have been overpriced -- $530 might be. Or not. Google does a lot more than search ads. But for search ads themselves (and those who do search marketing), the comparison to direct mail weathering past recessions suggests search marketing may do OK.
