Great post!About us pages have been the topic of conversation a lot lately, and you do a great job of outlining why its important, and how to put good content in it.There are sooo many scammers out there these days that having a good about us page may instantly put you in a good light with your visitors.
Thanks, CommonDavid,I really like creating about us pages that can engage, entertain, and inform people, and leave a good impression with them. One of the difficulties that I see with them isnt so much figuring out what to say, but rather deciding upon how youre going to say it to leave the best impression that you can.
One of the more comprehensive articles I have read concerning About Us Pages. I also have been reading a lot about people trying to stop these types of "support" pages from being indexed or receiving a supply of PageRank and your assessment makes a lot of sense. About Us pages that just leave a visitor with an empty feeling are quite common and it certainly doesn help the credibility of a business when this happens.Great Post Bill!
Great post, Bill! I have a lot of fun creating my About pages. :)
Good post. Ill have to update my about me page. That said, you dont need to install a site-wide nofollow on links to your about us page. Instead, you can limit PageRank flow so that instead of a TBPR 8 About Us page that has no chance of ranking for "about us", you have a TBPR 2 about us page that ranks #1 for queries related to your company name, your name, or email address.Remember - if you have a ton of pagerank flowing via sitewide links to an about us page, you will also create sacrificial pages on your site due to that influx of juice. If those pages dont make you money, fine. But if they are potential money makers, then I think its reasonable to sacrifice PageRank on an about page - which people will find anyway through a nav link - in order to help other pages get indexed and rank.
Marketing Sherpa had something about an about page boosting conversions 8% for some surfer/outdoor gear company, for those people that browsed it. The company had made it very personal with pics and discussing employee interests etc. Very uncorporate, very intune to their clients.
Interesting post. I never did and wouldnt recommend to block/nofollow the "about us" pages of a site (there might be a few instances where it would be okay, but I cannot think of one right now hehe). Privacy policy, terms of service, DMCA notice etc. okay, Contact Us page .... maybe (in most cases also not). The "About" page of my site is shown as "indented result" right after my homepage if you search for my last name (= name of my site). I like and want it that way, for the very reasons you elaborated in your post. ... People who dont know me and who I would like to make listen to me have probably a very important question in their mind when they look me up... "Who the heck is this guy?". You should not hide and make it hard for people to find out about who you are and what you do. Especially in an online world where people will find stuff eventually. If your own about pages are not indexed or got no juice to rank for queries of your name, you better make sure that the pages on other sites that rank for it have something nice to say about you.
Ive been trying to get people to take About Us pages seriously both as a web designer and and SEO for years. Now Ill have an excellent source of backup in this article - bookmarked for referring clients to.
