There is some extremely bad advice out there, stuff that everyone is well advised to avoid.

Spotting which that is, is a very difficult task.

In general if it involves a "scheme" or is touted as a "magic bullet", then it is best avoided, as Google and others will already be on to it.

If the advice looks like the technique is deigned to "trick" search engines, then it is likely bad advice. If it looks like it follows webmaster guidelines, and enhances usability, enforces standards, and so on, then it is likely safe.

Only experience, and researching all the "tricks" that have been closed down over the years, can give you a real clue.

By the way, there is nothing wrong with "dynamic" (parameter-driven) URLs per se, as long as there are less than 3 parameters in the URL.  The major issue with systems that use such URLs is that they are nearly always riddled with multiple major Duplicate Content issues of many types. That is usually the issue that needs fixing.

One of the fixes can involve changing to more static-looking URLs and using a rewrite to connect to the internal dynamic filepath, but unless extreme
care is taken to also set up redirects for all of the dynamic URL formats, then the problem is made
very much worse by implementing that strategy.

Finally, 301 redirects for non-canonical URLs can make a huge difference.  Every site should be doing that.

Great post. :)

I have nothing to add but those are true. As long as you have fresh contents or update it and still do SEO and not relying to existing ranking.
