If I were Seth I would request that account be removed from Twitter. That's pretty scary.
.. so is Jason Calcanis really Jason Calcanis?
Only JC would use that wallpaper Barry ;)
...but if it's not really JC, Oilman is going to be really upset. heh
Maybe he would have a case for removal. Still, personal names aren't protected. Identity theft is illegal but registering a name on a social network and *not* claiming this is that person..... Not sure. THink in the end you're at the mercy of the site's ToS and willingness to do something.
I don't know, Ruud. People's names, especially when they're branded such as Seth's are their trademark (regardless of whether they file for an actual trademark). At least that's my understanding of it.
Ironically, when Seth's Squidoo was fairly new, I went to register HighRankings as a Lense and someone else had already registered it. I contacted Seth to have the other person give it up, as I actually do have High Rankings as a registered trademark. The other person had basically just registered up a ton of SEO related terms and never answered Squidoo back when they contacted him, so they eventually allowed me to register that lense.
You're not allowed to impersonate someone else -- but you're allowed to carry a name or alias that exists elsewhere.
Imagine Jill Whalen the writer forcing you to give up your Facebook or Flickr registration ;)
You know, Ruud, someone could totally score Darren Browse, as it's still available! ;)
Considering the article is on his site, it's rather foolish he didn't get his own name. It somewhat devalues the entire article in a way.
Do what I say, but not what I do?
Ha ha. Nice pick up Tamar. It seems that Darren hasn't learned his lesson after all...
Shows why it's important to secure your name/handle at every major social media site (plus purchase your name as a dot com domain if available).
How many people in the world are called "Neil Patel"? I assume more than one is involved in search!
hopefully this article doesn't give anyone clever ideas....
@Bwelford: I don't think it matters. Really, could the a fake Jason put out anything less accurate or more foolish sounding than the real one? His reputation could only improve.
@SSS LOL
Actually, it's Darren Rowse, not Darren Browse. Just teasing ya. ;)
lol - you guys need to pay attention to the details. I have secured http://twitter.com/darrenrowse - but like Tamar says http://twitter.com/darrenBrowse is free and you're welcome to it. Similarly http://twitter.com/darrenCrowse - http://twitter.com/darrenDrowse http://twitter.com/darrenFrowse and many others are up for grabs! :-)
