Sphinn Home » Link Building
When we analyze incoming links, we tend to focus on more or less the same set of link parameters. However, sometimes looking beyond the regular, can provide the opportunity to not only succeed in link building, but even dominate the niche you are competing in. One of these uncommon parameters is the link freshness factor.

Not Sphinning this is a crying shame. This is one of my favorite posts I've seen in quite awhile.

Words like "dominate the niche" get me all warm and fuzzy. Time to tap some links. :)

That is a good one. I left some comments on the blog post about fresh links devaluing over time and the impact on rankings.

I love this kind of post although I'm sure it scares some of the search engine folks. SEOs are supposed to be hacks after all :-)

A very solid post indeed, although I would point out that there are several other variables that would affect the "B" score.

For example, if the link comes from blog or newspaper, the value of said link would taper off as the link gradually moves into the site's archive.

Another major factor is the fluctuation in rank and/or authority of the site that is giving the link. Just as your site's rank is affected by a new inbound link, the site in question is also undergoing similar fluctuations, which in turn, affect the "B" value that said link exerts on your own rankings.

Still this is a great blog post with some great research and great insights.

The part I agree with most relates to spacing out new link acquisitions for the purpose of gauging their success. This is especially useful if you still engage in buying links or reciprocating.

Great post. I think we sometimes get caught up in just aquiring links and forget to actually track the results of specific techniques.

@everyone: thanks for all the positive response. It means alot to see such great comments from the experts in the field.

@hugo: as I wrote in one of my previous posts , it is close to impossible to create a sterile testing environment in SERPs. There will always be factors that are either unknown or not in your contrul, such as the things you have mentioned. However, what gives extra validity to the results and "protects" them from interfering unknown factors, is the repetition. It is almost impossible that all these interfering factors had exactly the same effect in all the cases I have checked. Therefore it is quite safe to assume that the phenomena presented is real and not some byproduct of some other factor not taken into account.

Agreed, Neyne! Replication is key.

By the way, just to be a pain, I wanted to point out one other variable that's difficult to account for are other unsolicited inbound links that are acquired. This one is especially troublesome for content-rich sites that generate lots of unsolicited inbound links on a regular basis.

That being said, your research and standpoint are invaluable to the enterprising SEO that's serious about making an impact via link-building.
