In my experience it's been the least disruptive social tool I've used. I follow nearly every active SEO I know and I've gotten a wealth of timely information without having to browse any sites. That and knowing when Danny Sullivan is going to bed. :)
Just go with the flow ...
I didn't get it at first either... until I joined.
Same for me - I did not jump on right away, but with 3rd party tools like Twitterific and in my case, twhirl, it's not very disruptive and productive for micro content promotion, finding new/interesting content from my network and fielding ideas - much more quickly than IM or email.
Here, for those who are still wondering if Twitter can be fun or helpful, here's the first article I ever wrote on it...
A Quick Jaunt Into Data Mining on Twitter
At the end, there's the label for all my Twitter Articles, including, "Further Exploitation Via Data Mining on Twitter", etc...
Twitter, like anything else, has uses that were never envisioned by it's creators.
I Twitter a bit, although I havent used it as much or as well as it can be - i must say I'm way more open to twitter than facebook - which is hard to use, confusing and a royal pain - in my opinion :)
New resolution for Feb, learn more about Twitter :) Great article, Kim!

I haven't been swayed yet. It could be because I'm not an SEO/M anymore...having left the industry to support it from the usability/user experience side. So while I need and want to stay on top of everything SEO so my practices don't conflict with seo, I don't think I need Twitter for that. I have Cre8asiteforums.
The other thing is the part about seeing other conversations. It's this way in Facebook too, where we're often on the outside looking in, getting one sided conversations. Some people share too much information as well...very personal stuff that I don't need or want to know. I don't want to add Twittter on top of this buzz.
Soooo, I'm still staying open but so far am not convinced Twitter will make me productive, help me sell services or contribute something practical I can't already get elsewhere.
I'm with you, Kim. There's just so much time I can devote to social sites, let alone social site upon social site.
As well, with forums, you can pop in and see what's going on. But it seems like the nature of social sites is that you have to keep on top of them every second -- it's a rather breathless thing. Or maybe that's just how I see them. :)
Anyway ...
Hi Kim..
I agree with you on some of the points that you make in reference to seeing this in the usual sense.
But I'll have to say that your post got me to thinking about some of the fun as well as the more fulfilling uses I've found by utilizing Twitter.
If you care to read it (as it was too long to add to Sphinn/your post) here's the URL:
