Phil Butler has an interesting post that I think will lead to some provocative thought and discussion. Are social networks (ie. Facebook and Myspace) dying, or are we merely migrating to more advanced forms of social networks?

What are your thoughts?

rarely does anything substantive get discussed on a Myspace page, or in a "bulletin". I think these communities suffer from a lack of focus: communication simply for the sake of communicating gets old real fast.

The nature of posting messages on these sites usually means that only half of any given conversation takes place on one page...who wants to go back and forth between profiles to understand what's going on? I don't think these networks are conducive to productively exchange information or have conversations involving more than two people. Time wasting junk, IMHO.

I could not agree more with Dark on this. Of course some people are going to talk on their cell phones for the sake of talking, but sites without substance are doomed to loss if not total failure. We need someone to act on this and produce an innovation of merit for people to actually get something out of, rather than more time wasters as Dark says.

Interesting topic. I think mature web users tire quickly of social networks such as Facebook. I know I certainly did. My experience was exactly as the author described it, I quickly realised it didn't offer any communication opportunities over email and IM. And yes... the viral applications annoy the crap out of me. I still don't understand why so many people engage with them.

I don't think social networks are dead however. I think they'll always remain popular with high school and university students as they largely represent a popularity contest. They'll also probably retain some sort of usage from procrastinating office workers who will look for any sort of activity to occupy their time (aside from work...).

It just may be that they become less prominent as the older demographics tire of the 'gimmicky' features.

Its the liberal vs conservative paradigm... myspace is full of kids... or unfulfilled adults who are just like kids... and then there are the marketers who "love" them.  Seriously... if you know how to market... and I'm not talking about porn and setting up accounts with hot girl pics... then myspace is chock full of people who all have WANTS AND NEEDS.

It's fish in a barrel folks... and James is right... the less mature use it for an outlet... but the more mature can use it to make a living if they know what to do.
