Excellent reminder... the only thing I would add to it is the importance of revisiting that data and updating it to get a historical sense of your progress versus specific competitors.
Good stuff!!!
Gonzo I am glad that you were more in depth with your info and thank you for the reference. I've added your post link as a follow-up reading suggestion.
@danieldessinger - That is an excellent point. I should have mentioned how important it is to stay on top of what they are doing. You can't just forget about them, you need to stay prepared.
@SpostareDuro Thanks for the inspiration to write the post!
Easy 10 minute competitive analysis you can run:
1. Run a competitor through seodigger.com. Download the list in a CSV.
2. Run your competitor through a backlink mining tool, which will effectively pull up a good chunk of a competitor's backlinks, anchor text associated with each link.
Now, take a competitor's highest ranking money term (e.g. "las vegas real estate"). Run a search through the mined data looking only at links with those words in the anchor text.
Because the site is ranking high for that term, there's a good chance at least some of those backlinks are working. Look through those links to see which ones are worth going after.
Thanks halfdeck!
@halfdeck.
That's exactly what I am doing. I love SEO Digger for that. If only they were harvesting more keywords, but its still better than paying for Hitwise or Adgooroo etc.
For backlink mining and anchor text analysis I use my tool - http://www.linkdiagnosis.com . Check it out if you haven't used it yet.
Gotta Love the simplicity or unifying the tools. Half Deck, gave away a gem on that one...
