Overheard Matt Cutts at a conference on this regarding toolbar data in April 2006. "So I’m not going to say definitively that Google doesn’t/won’t use toolbar data (or other signals) in ranking. "

Thank you for the sphinn, Kimberly :)Matt does sometimes come out with some stuff that’s really helpful to know, though there definitely are limits to what he can share with us.I think that Google and Yahoo are both making use of toolbar data, Lee.One of the difficulties might not be in collecting data, but rather considering what might be important enough to use in some meaninful manner. Building profiles about web sites, estimating traffic and guessing topics for ads on similar sites, understanding timely new topics, making educated guesses about probabilities of visiting specific pages; these are potentially all good ways to use that data. What I liked in these patent filings was that they went beyond toolbar collection, to tell us that they might use portal usage, ISP collection at "trusted" sites with personal profiles, Search, and other information all together
