David - please read http://www.ericward.com/articles/whylinkmoses.htmlI was given the LinkMoses moniker by another speaker at SES San Jose several years ago.I would never give myself a nickname, let alone one like that. It bothered me at the time so I decided to make light of it, and used it as a way to get even. Three years later, bingo.http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q=linkmoses&btnG=Google+SearchMission accomplished. Content is nothing without links, which I know from 14 years seeking them, so Id never say such a foolish thing without clarification. Up until last year I kept my mouth shut about several link buildng approaches that were pointless. Since I have become more outspoken against them, I have been attacked. So be it. I know Im not perfect. I suck at several aspects of this link-buildnig-as-a-business thing. I get overwhelmed with it all, I dont respond fast enough etc. I know all this. But one thing I will not do is sit by while people sell bullshit services or dont at least have the decency to give the client the opportunity to request and receive a 100% refund.Eric Ward, aka, well, you know.
Eric, well said. Thank you for replying to this type of thing. Unfortunately, there are those who continue the unsavory tactics and give the rest of us a bad name. Link building is only as good as those who actually do the building.
Its not what you say, its the way you say it. Some people seem to be more humble than others.
In my opinion... The way you present yourself just makes me feel like you have some sort of superiority complex. (Gods gift to link building)
Even though I agree that Eric may come across as "arrogant" in his presentations and writings... and the fact that he never called me back about a year-and-a-half ago after I left a few messages during my in-house stint with a huge company, even after speaking to him briefly in person at a conference in regards to my interest in hiring him...Im still a fan. Im interested in his point of view.
I feel a need to weigh in here. As Erics editor and also having moderated his sessions at numerous conferences, I can attest that Eric is one of the most genuinely humble people in the industry. He also really knows his stuff. While I can understand Davids point of view, I personally take the view that Erics tone isnt arrogant, but rather straightforward and to the point. Id much rather see unvarnished opinion than a nicer, gentler approach that doesnt really convey any purpose or meaning. And while I cant remember for sure, it may very well have been me that introduced Eric as a "link moses" - if so, Ill gladly take the blame (with apologies to Eric for the unintentional consequences! :-)
Thanks for your personal email Eric. I have deleted the post from my blog. You were loosing me there for a while but Im still a fan as well.
