How to get the businesses with multiple locations in the same city (e.g. two Starbucks on opposite corners) to rank for the same local search query, or something to that effect.

I love it Andrew!
Working on the opposite right now. Imagine 7 businesses all with the same location. Only thing different is the suite number. We are going to see a lot of this with buildings that house multiple attorneys, dentists, surgeons, etc...

I don't think this should be a problem Michael as long as each business has its own web presence or at least its own page on a site and the services are clearly delineated.  Depending how friendly these businesses are there might even be some potential linking benefit and referral benefit as well.

@andrewsho Ha Ha, I suggested they get friendly and that's the direction we are moving in, rather than have everyone fight for positions. All provide a similar service (but we are differentiating), it's a medical building.

Well then make sure all of the other guys' sites link to yours with the words "Santa Monica Chiropractor" in the anchor text :)
