All right. This isn’t a fresh article, but then again the main point of the article is to think long term when developing a site.

A post that does not reach the digg front page, may actually lead to more traffic than a "digg rocket" in the long run.

An article covering a narrow topic may, for instance, be found far out in "the long tail", but it will rank well in the search engines for the relevant queries, leading to a steady flow of visitors. If you think ad views, these visitors are actually more valuable than the diggers.
