The original idea behind Friends in Facebook, IMHO, was to list the people who were your friends, buddies, or otherwise people you knew in person.Friends in social media would be better described as colleagues, contacts, or acquaintances.

While I agree that most social media ’friends’ are not real friends (Facebook aside), that does not mean they do not provide any value.I prefer the term peers. I’ve befriended a range of industry peers in StumbleUpon and am seeing great returns via the content they filter through to me. I even have semi regular email conversations with some. They key is to be highly selective over who you befriend.

I like the word ’contacts’.  That’s what the Internet allows with great efficiency, making contacts.

While it’s safe to say that you are better off just adding people who know "in real life", oftentimes those connections with people who you may not know have ended up resulting in great networking opportunities, jobs and more.  @ bwelford - "Contacts" is a great word to describe iit!

There is the good side and the not-so-good side of having a large network, befriending a lot of members in social media sites. We have to know who we network with and what can we do for them and what could they do for us also.
