From Clickz, Giant newspaper publisher Gannett is firing up its mobile efforts with new ad offerings at 100 mobile sites for its newspaper properties. Is the print giant getting more limber? Do online pure-plays have anything to worry about in mobile?

I left Gannett for the greener pastures of the Internet in 1996. My old paper's mobile site at http://m.shreveporttimes.com/ is showing one ad on the home page for the town's "premier" dry cleaner. Oddly, I can't find any national ads ... the movie listings page sits lonely .. the weather page is unadorned with ads. Imagine getting buy-in from a local dry cleaner before the national campaigns.

The newspapers could have and maybe should have owned local, they didn't do much about it 10 years ago. Interesting to see how this plays out.

Launching so many at once, they may get a little desperate for content...hmmmm.
