In a nutshell they are opening Office 2007 and other programs to become inter operable with non-Microsoft programs.
Why am I mentioning this here on a search marketing board?
A term that I heard over and over again during the conference call was API. While the Microsoft execs did not mention search and while APIs are not search engine specific, I can see this as a strategic move that may enable Microsoft the ability to more closely integrate its search products and software products--to enhance Office and other software with search capability and to put Office online to compete with Google Docs--while mitigating antitrust concerns. After all, if everyone has access to interoperability there is no monopoly.
Microsoft has been leaning toward this for some time (http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2006/jul06/07-06OpenSourceProjectPR.mspx). Still, something must make them feel that they will still have a strategic advantage after integrating widespread openness. I think that strategic advantage is Microsoft Live Search and MS Live products.
