As a website owner, how should you position your message in the Web 2.0 world?

The increasingly savvy buying public will quickly shun marketers. Internet readers want information from the Internet. They don't want advertising, marketing, or a "pitch".

According to Schefren in his Attention Age Doctrine, the solution is to become a social media "Maven".

A Maven is a trusted authority, like a friend, on the social media websites. As you gain their trust, your audience will return to you over and over again wanting to invest in your advice.

I agree that Social Media is a great way to produce information and receive traffic that is "accepted" by people who may not like advertising, but I disagree with your conclusion that the public will "shun" advertising.  Internet advertising is more focused because the consumer sees ads directed more to them, compared to push advertising like newspaper, magazines, or TV.  Even then, offline push advertising has been around for decades and people still haven't "shun" it.  I see the same for internet marketing.  It won't be as cutting edge as it is today, and there will be lots of new ways to advertise to people in the future, but as long as there are eyeballs online, an advertiser will be willing to pay to follow them.

Very interesting piece of imformation. The wine guys example is very true. Though I think sometimes we rung into trouble acting like a superstar on TV, cos not everyone can become one and sometimes it may look funny acting like one. We may also have to look at that aspect - how to balance it out, What to do when you face a social media downslide?

Good article and points. Start the blog yes, but start thinking about video. As the article points out, video is what drove a large audience for the wine site. As more people are accustomed to video online, creating good quality video content creates a distinction right out of the gate.

Now video is not the easiest medium to perfect, which is why good video breaks you out of the pack. A little bit of research into shooting and editing good video will go a long way.

Good points to remember when doing social media sites, blogs and other money-making materials online.
