When doing keyword research it is important not to get in a rut and simply look at keyword research as “consumer” only… or worse, from the business point of view rather than the potential customer’s point of view. But smart keyword researchers realize there are many angles to consider when planning your keywords so that you don’t miss out on a particular segment which could equal clicks and conversions.

I think KW research is one of the most important yet skimped-over parts of the whole SEO process (at least by some firms). Good article.

I have heard about dodgy so called SEO firms asking THEIR clients to provide them with a list of keywords!!!

Asking the client to provide a preliminary list of keywords makes sense if it is an market in which the website owner and his customers share a distinct professional jargon. Most technological markets are like this but not only technological markets. The preliminary list should be then expanded by the SEO workers. Otherwise, how can you know whether EMR for instance also refers to a term used in his market - by looking at his competitors' websites you may not find it because only your client manufactures EMR.
