Given recent developments on the BBC website are they about to launch into the search market? And if they do, could they take on Google?

It's highly unlikely that they will compete with Google on any significant level.

Have you actually read the feedback on the BBC blog about the new homepage? 90%+ of people actually dislike it and I for one don't like the new BBC homepage.

To save repeating myself, have a read of my thoughts at my blog at http://www.good-together.co.uk/index.php/websites/dear-bbc-i-am-not-blind/

Feedback percentages like this can give a bit of a distorted picture - people are far less likely to leave feedback if they're happy with the a new design.

Likewise, 90 people might write in to complain about a TV programme vs. 10 that write a letter of praise. It definitely doesn't mean that 90% of the 5 million people who watched it took issue.

I could definitely see the Beeb looking more closely at search - they've certainly got the branding to attempt it.

I;ve beena  huge fan of the Beeb website for years and have had it as my homepage for most of that time. The new page (which has been available in beta for a while) does still have some issues, and the colour scheme needs work, but  don't plan on changing my home page any time soon.

It would be interesting to see what kind of effect BBC would have on Google but we're thinking it may be a small dent as opposed to taking them on fully.  Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see exactly what happens.
