"It takes more than a girlish color scheme and soft focus photos of smiling children to draw women to your site and earn their loyalty"..I love that line. *-)
Very good stuff, particularly the details from the Pew study on how women aggregate information.
This article illustrates why Christine is one of my heroes. When I grow up, I want to be just like her. :)
I especially found interesting the part about how women tend to read the words while men tend to start with the pictures and skim the text. I hear all the time about how "people" don't read online, but that was at odds with my personal experience -- I read online all the time. Sure, I skim too, especially when I'm in a hurry, but when an article grabs my attention, or a product is something I'm really interested in, I'll read every word on the page.
Wonderful food for thought here.
If I just add my picture to all my sites, that should be sxy enough... no?
Utility can be sexy too. I remember being in a van full of people that broke down in the rain on a dark night. One of the older guys was a mechanic. He jumped out and 15 minutes later the engine fired up. One of the women said "That was sooo sexy!" and the rest agreed. :}
Thanks for the kind words and the Sphinns. I just got back from SMX West and dropped into Sphinn and was pleased to see that the article resonated with others.
This idea of tailoring the sites to better match the target audience has been on my mind a lot lately. I recently acquired a client whose main target audience is women. The client had a professional looking web site and the site ranked well on the "coolness" metric, but it wasn't converting well. As I started to decipher why the pages weren't performing I started making recommendations for changes that would make the site more appealing to women. It worked; the client immediately saw improvements in conversions.
The essence of the article is give people what they want and you'll be rewarded. It's back to basic marketing. It takes a little longer to do things right, but it usually pays off.
Oh and Torka, you'll always be one of my heroes too. :-)
It's interesting that you wrote about this subject, what with Adwords' demographic targeting now available in beta. SEMs are going to have to get really scientific to start targeting a number of different psychological combinations. I recently wrote about a test I ran just on image ads alone, utilizing different images catered to men and women. The next step is of course landing page design catered to different genders and age groups, and your article will certainly come in handy!
My site used to be lackluster until I included the free porn gallery and suddenly the traffic is off the scale, too much sex appeal...
(. )(. )
Yay. Sphinn got more sex appeal!
just kidding. Good article though.
