Google wants you to spend your money on adwords, text link sellers want you to spend money on buying your links, an SEO simply wants the targeted traffic.

But what about the poor old searcher? Do paid links effect the quality of search?

I think they do, but that's just me. :)

I know whenever I search - I always look for the 'paid' listings areas - and then don't give them a second glance.

Of course they are, but they have no pull on search results because they don't pass juice.
