I think there is another excellent article on this issue:
Top 10 DO NOTs for reputation management
The question shouldn't be one of difficulty, but of brand.
A good company with a strong brand and good customer support can be properly leveraged.
A company with no brand, no customer support, and willing to rip off customers should not be encouraged.
Interesting article but I would have liked to have read more about how to get that stuff OFF the page. That is what I thought it was going to be about. Aftera-all, the title of this submission started with the word "Removing...".
Evertett,
In the lower points it talks about how to outrank results by making and optimizing a class of page that is higher up on the list - and it tries to answer the headline question: "How Difficult is It?"
Stay tuned for details and best practices about negotiating changes and actually removing existing content from the Web!
It's not that you can fully remove the negative content about you, but you can have control on the amount of POSITIVE content that is added onto the web. It's not that difficult to push all the negatives down, it's just time intensive and also it requires a few months for new websites to get indexed, thus resulting in patience for anyone wanting to manage their online reputation.
BrickMarketing that is what we mean by "off the page" as in "off the home page". I don't think anyone expects to actually get the content removed from Google's index without hacking the site, setting up a new Google Webmaster Tools site verification file and using the Remove tool - which probably isn't an option. And unless you are really confident that it will work, getting spam links into the negative page is a risk - it "could" actually help them rank better.
So, aside from setting up social media profiles and blogs, and getting some links into them, interlinking them, and using them to build links into your main page (i.e. the primary site), and optimizing your main page with everything in your SEO and link building arsenal... What, specifically, can be done to push unflattering content off the first few pages of Google? I really want to hear something new on this subject because there are a few instances of this problem that I just can't get rid of no matter how hard I try. Others are easy, but like Brett said, if you have a big brand and the negative page has been up for awhile and gained momentum - sometimes it is an uphill battle.
