Regardless of the evolutionary path of SEO, there will always be those who understand it, those who pretend to understand it and those who are completely ignorant of it...
for that reason, those who understand it (or at the very least, those who employ those who understand it) will always have a marked advantage over those who continue choosing to ignore it.

SEO is about understanding the concepts behind the processes...not just the processes. A lot of website owners can't understand SEO. Those who can often refuse to take the time. SEO is safe, though its landscape and scope will continue to change in the years to come, with more and more focus likely turning toward Social Network and Social Marketing Optimization.
