Nice article by Patrick Altoft, and thanks DaveDavis for sharing.... Patrick you are right that there is less chances of ranking in short period of 3 to 6 months..It is really good idea to increse trust without using anchor text and getting natural links.....

Didn't give a thorough argument against anchor text, you can persue both at the same time.

Some people are tempted by artificial linking campaigns due to the fact that they promise instant gratification, but I found artifical links are actually harder to build, in general, than blogging once or twice a week for 12 months. Blogs also have the tendency to accumulate links passively.

As steve pointed out, ideally, you want to run two campaigns in parallel - but sometimes lack of resources/time forces you to choose.

Keep in mind, just because a link is from an authority site doesn't mean its trusted. For example, there's a general lack of trust in the SEO niche since many relatively authoritative sites sell links; and those sites, regardless of their high authority, aren't trusted.
