Otherwise I have enjoyed Danny being in UK. We both on very adjacent time zones and can communicate in real-time :-)
Welcome Back to Cali! Now you can steal the Sphinn license plate from Hodads in OB.
Big news! Good for you, Danny. I'm sure all the family will be fine. It will surely be a lot easier on you in terms of travel.
That must have been a big weight off your mind once you'd made the decision. Good luck with the move back and your family's future Danny!
BTW what are the costs like, the last time I was in the UK the prices were crazy - will it be a trade-up in lifestyle or down? I've always found the US very reasonably priced as a traveller, even compared to Russia, but don't have any experience of the day to day costs.
I can imagine the British weather might eventually get to a native Californian.
Just to be certain, are you absolutely positive on this one Danny? Are you sure you won't miss our drizzle? No-one does bleak, miserable weather like us Brits.
You may also find you've become allergic to sunshine ;)
Somehow, I'll suffer through the sunshine.
Nick, the US is much cheaper. We'll probably buy health insurance, since even though we'll still have our UK coverage, I don't think we'd want to depend on that in an emergency. Oddly, paying both US and California tax will probably equal UK tax (everyone thinks the UK is so much higher).
But aside from that, well, selling our existing cars here will easily cover buying brand new ones over there. The US is just that much cheaper. Plus, I've always been paid in dollars, so with the exchange rate still being so bad, makes it even better.
@Danny
Yep Anna couldn't believe how much cheaper goods were in the US compared to Russia. It is getting very expensive here though now, especially as the Stabalization fund (160bln) is probably going to leave Russia untouched while the West weakens economically. We went to look at flats here the other day and the developer told us quite a few people can come up with $240k in cash. You're looking at 2x that to get onto the property ladder in central Moscow now (on the tube routes). Crazy times.
Anyway, good luck with the move! And I think Treehouse v.2 will be even better ;) heh
@Nick - I always thought of Russia as being inexpensive too. Sounds like times are changing.
@Danny - I'm sure you'll manage OK eventually :) I'd like to think that when you're back in the hot, sunny California climate you'll be taking at least a small part of British culture back to the US with you: http://tinyurl.com/2xgv6w
@Baiduyou - Yep things have changed very fast in the 4yrs I've been here. Moscow got voted most expensive city for second time in a row by the Mercer study.

On the one hand it's great for companies to sell here but on the other, our costs are rising too. You never know, soon it will be cheaper for us to move to NYC and grab our Russian workers from Brooklyn Beach heh
BTW - that link isn't working for me?
@Nick - Thanks for the info, I was well out of date - I had no idea the cost of living in Moscow had now overtaken London and Tokyo.
Tinyurl seems a bit temperamental lately, though you weren't missing a great deal: http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/travelog/socksandsandalsblog.jpg
Socks and sandals! Ah yes, hopefully Danny can show them back home how to properly dress for the beach? :D
Aw, we don't need shoes. It's lovely here in SoCal right now (near Magic Mountain), and we're in shorts and T-shirts. Can't beat it.
Congrats, Danny. Wait til your kids see all there is to do here. And what it's like in the spring and summer.
(And I'm hoping for conferences that are a little closer than, say, a few thousand miles.)
