Automating the SEO process would take the industry's biggest weakness (scalability) and turn it into our biggest strength (economies of scale).

Amen.  Some people fear the assembly line making cars at speed but others see it as a way to increase demand by lower the price.  I'm pretty firmly in that second camp, but I would be since that is our business model. :-)

I think about the challenge of scalability within an SEO firm every single day. I'm convinced that you'll never be able to automate every single aspect of SEO/SEM. In fact, probably not the most important parts, but if you don't automate as much as possible, you'll never be able to compete with those who do.
