When you type a keyword into the search box and click search, you are essentially searching the site via a site command using Google's search engine. For example, I typed in mortgage rate into the search box within my NY Times search and Google returns pages from the New York Times that match that query.

I think you copied and pasted the wrong part of the description to explain it. :)
In short, search on amazon or wikipedia or ny times at Google and you will find a secondary search box that allows you to do a quick site search for those sites.

Hmmm. Interesting, I'm not seeing this yet.

Wow, seeing it, Barry.
I wonder how that will alter user behavior. It's a whole new ball game.
Thanks for covering this.

@rustybrick - You're right Barry, the brief description doesn't fully explain it - you really need to read the article and see the screenshots for best effect. Thanks for adding a more detailed description

@Burgo - me neither, but I suspect Google will get it right on their main datacentres before such changes propogate to our local ones.

I too wonder for how many sites, the secondary search option's been availed. I check the feature and found some of the sites having the same thing. The sites are:  Accenture
Ndtv
National Geographic
NASA

By the way, thanks for the update.

I noticed it for Flickr.com yesterday, but rather than searching images (that would be too obvious) it just performs a site search instead.

I doubt this will be the functionality that most Google users will be expecting when they click on it.

More importantly FOR Google,  they can now track two-stage behavioral patterns.
If they can track what the user searches beyond the second field, [since technically they are still on the Google Homepage]  they will gather far more accurate behavioral data in the aggregate.
This would give them exponentially more powerful targeting, and criteria for the next major algo formulation.

Interesting. One thing I've noticed is that I need to be logged in with my Google Account. I see the box when I'm logged into my FF browser, but I don't see the search bodx on my second browser (cache cleared, not logged in). That would make sense that this is part of Universal search and that they're only showing you search boxes for the sites you frequent most. Also, not all sites seem to get this secondary box

I saw that search box for a Canadian site, which isn't as obviously popular as YouTube or Flickr. It has a Google Search feature though, which leads to some speculation about how a Google Custom Search Engine on your site could help.

I would like to bring out a point that no one, points out, - i see this search within search feature as a way for Google to cross sell products / ‘MERCHANTS’, basically where this happens is that for example: I’m doing a search on Google for amazon.com > than I’m searching in the search within search box for apple on amazon.com [and the reason is because I like Amazon so I’m going directly to them] - try it out for yourself you will find that there is sponsored links on that page even if you are searching only from within amazon.com Now this is a way of being able for Google to make more money and promotes your competitors products on your search results page. - Just my observation –
